I had never heard of the Wilhelm Gustloff before I read this book. I had a morbid fascination with the Titanic equally a child, but I gauge it never occurred to me to inquiry other maritime tragedies? Anyway, the Wilhelm Gustloff is like the Titanic disaster on steroids: Three Russian torpedoes sank this ship so damn fast during WW2; There were too few lifeboats, and likewise much panic/disorganization in filling the lifeboats; It was the expressionless of winter (only existence exposed to the frigid sea air for besides long could kill you lot, allow alone the water itself). The story is told from four point-of-views. I liked Joana and Florian from the start. Emilia took some fourth dimension to grow on me but ultimately became my favorite character. I wasn't sure what to recollect of Alfred. I wasn't certain if I should feel bad for him because he's plain delusional and has major bug but one matter is sure: I oasis't then passionately disliked a character this way in a long, long time.

Joana is function of a grouping of refugees trying to stay ahead of the speedily advancing Red Ground forces. It's the wintertime of 1945, and the East Prussia has dissolved into chaos. In his caput, he writes imaginary letters of all his adventures to Hannelore, the daughter back home he fancies. When he comes across a soldier with a peak surreptitious mission, Alfred knows helping him could earn him a medal, and the respect he finally deserves.

These 4 people, just getting a showtime to their lives, are all aboard the Wilhelm Gustloff when Soviet torpedoes sink it into the icy waters. The vessel was filled several times over capacity with German refugees escaping Eastward Prussia. Of the ten,000 approximately on board, less than a thousand would survive.
Table salt to the Sea past Ruta Sepetys was an first-class book. She is ane of the best female person authors writing historical fiction books about second world state of war. It'south fast-paced, thoroughly-researched, basically information technology encompasses all the best things about historical fiction. Ruta Sepetys' novel Betwixt Shades of Gray has been on my tbr for a long time and I'll definitely be bumping information technology up to a higher priority.
