Continuation of Poztponed Nats Yankees Game

WASHINGTON — The Yankees are scheduled to open a series in Kansas City on Friday against the Royals, but at the rate they're going, it would hardly be a surprise to see Dorothy and Toto flying by when they get there.

They were rained out again at Nationals Park on Wednesday, as both Tuesday's suspended game, which was scheduled to resume with the score tied 3-3 in the middle of the sixth, and the regularly scheduled game were postponed. The games were rescheduled for June 18 at Nationals Park beginning at 5:05 p.m.

"We'll be fine,'' manager Aaron Boone said of the frequent washouts. "We have guys throwing bullpens and guys in the cage hitting. Obviously, we played [Wednesday] night. It's not perfect, it's not ideal, but it's a couple days here that hopefully we can take advantage of from a rest standpoint and reset the pen a little bit."

Since Sunday, when the start of the Yankees and A's was delayed by nearly three hours, the Yankees had an off day Monday, played 5½ innings Tuesday and never took the field Wednesday.

Though it may help rest their bullpen, the Yankees now risk having too much rest with some of their starters.

Boone said they would pitch CC Sabathia — who was slated to start Wednesday night's game — on Friday, with Luis Severino going Saturday and Sonny Gray on Sunday.

Masahiro Tanaka is scheduled to pitch again Monday. Domingo German will be available in the pen, but if he's not used, he could step back into the rotation Tuesday.

The other hurdle comes next month, when the Yankees will have to travel to Detroit for a makeup doubleheader June 4 and then back to Washington two weeks later in what now will be a 16-day stretch without an off day.

"It's a challenge, but one we've got to meet, period,'' Boone said of the busy schedule. "Luckily, the guys in that room are really good at dealing with stuff. We'll have to go to Detroit in a couple weeks and then coming back here is part of it. The expectation is we'll handle it well and get to know each other even better."

"You've got to deal with it,'' Giancarlo Stanton said. "It would be worse if we were just sitting around here all day and then they bang it. We get good notice. We get a little workout in or things cleaned up and play when the weather is ready."

As for why they didn't try to make the games up Thursday, when both teams are off, the Yankees were unable to get blocks of hotel rooms because of a number of conventions and graduations in the area, and because Washington's Ryan Zimmerman is hosting a charity event at the stadium.

In addition, the weather is not supposed to be good again.

The Yankees might not have to face Max Scherzer, after all. AP

"I was told definitely [Tuesday] that [Thursday] was not an option," Boone said.

It's the kind of conversation he's grown accustomed to in his first year of managing, as the weather has been a factor throughout much of baseball — especially the Northeast and Midwest.

Asked if this was the worst spring he'd experienced, Boone said: "I've got to believe it's up there. And I know we're not alone. It's been this way for a lot of people."

Perhaps the one bit of good news for the Yankees — at least for now — is the fact Max Scherzer was scheduled to start for the Nationals on Wednesday night. The right-hander is 7-1 with a 1.69 ERA this season.

Scherzer still could go up against the Yankees when they return next month, but when asked about this break, Boone just smiled and said, "You always like facing the best, especially when I don't have to hit him."
